Patient Highlights
Common Poorwills-This common poorwill came to us from Swauk Prairie. It flew up from the ground and was hit by a car. The accident injured it's elbow and we found that it was very swollen. With some care the swelling is going away, just like when the doctor fixes your injury. We don't know if this is a boy or a girl because they all look the same. The sounds they make don't give us any clues to their sex either. Both sexes make the same sounds. With some birds the males and females make different sounds when they sing, chirp or call.
Can you hear it growling when it eats? Do you think it's just hungry? I think that sound would scare predators away! Poorwills blend in very well with the ground. Can you tell that he would be hard to find in a forest? What is the name for that? At night they fly around and catch insects. They have a very important job keeping the insect population under control. Do you like this bird?
